26 minutes...
That is exactly how much time I put Madeline's nebulizers into the microwave for....
And I know a lot of your are wondering ....."How is that possible?"
Usually we wash the nebs with soapy water, rinse them off under the faucet, and place them into the
(baby bottle) sterilizer for exactly.......
6 MINUTES....not 26 MINUTES?!
It wasn't until I smelled something burning that I realized that it may have been this.....
The sterilizer looked fine when I pulled it out of the microwave...but the tough part was actually
pulling it out of the microwave....
When I did manage to get it out...it left a string of melted plastic inside the microwave and a BIG hole
in our sterilizer....
And I cringed as I opened it. I was sure all of Madeline's nebulizers were melted. All of them at $18.00 a piece.....
...and those nebulizers were untouched. It seems as though every CF mom has melted nebs in there lifetime. It is what we do all day....sterilize nebs 2 -3 times daily. But never have I melted the sterilizer.....
I am not exactly sure how I did this. But I can only figure that I was racing around to get things done and my fingers must have hit too many buttons on that mircowave to get to 26 minutes!
I am pretty sure the timing was right though because my mom walked in the door to watch Madeline just as it was happening. And I think this was a good sign that I needed a small break from mommyhood for a bit.
I am not entirely surprised by my mishap with the sterilizer. It's been a crazy week. Madeline got an ear infection over the weekend, followed by a cough. So, I have been spending a lot of time tending to her and hoping that these antibiotics do some magic. We also started inhaled Colistin at home to help treat her Pseudo and have worked in an added treatment in hopes that it helps her cough subside. We are vigilant but still hopeful that the cough is a result of her ear infection and it will clear. In the meantime we understand that if it doesn't go away or she worsens (after the antibiotics).... the hospital may be our best option.
More updates soon.....
We have been through two ENTIRE pots sets melting nebs. It's the worst smell ever and a very costly mistake! I hate sterilizing nebs..a CF pitfall of mine yet I do it 2-3 times daily too. Good luck with her cough/ear. We are starting TOBI and I'm already dreading it...PA stinks. Hang in there. If you do get IVs, I;m sure they can show you how to do them at home? Best of luck. Megan
ReplyDeleteCrazy! I'm so glad the nebs were okay...nothing like melting expensive supplies. Bryce has a cough currently. He has had it for 3 weeks so we have upped our treatments as well. I hope that you guys can beat the pseudo. I think of your sweet girl often. Hugs.
